In July 2026, AI models undergoing cybersecurity testing autonomously hacked real organizations. Their developers neither intended nor expected it. OpenAI, Hugging Face, and Anthropic have each reported related incidents.

These events suggest that AI capabilities may be advancing faster than the safeguards needed to manage them responsibly.

More than 1,300 employees at leading AI companies have signed the Pacing the Frontier letter, asking governments to coordinate and deliberately pace the development of the most advanced AI systems. Only AI lab employees can sign it.

This is not a call to stop AI development. It is a call to keep progress from outrunning our ability to understand, secure, and govern it.
